"Medium to full bodied. Dusty black cherry & berry fruit with a hint of new oak. Flavors of black cherry and menthol. Nice structure and tannin. Needs some time to open up. Decant. (Cabernet & Syrah Blend.) This Shape Shifter experienced a winfall. Because of my decisions regarding the 2006 Sensei, lots of top notch juice found its way into the blend. Solid, solid wine." - (Maynard James Keenan's Merkin Vineyards)

  • Merkin Chupacabra is a terrific example of how far wine has come in Arizona. Rich and complex, needs a little time to open up but a very good effort from Maynard James Keenan's Merkin Vineyards.

I CANNOT believe that any product, let alone a wine, would use the word Merkin. Look it up, folks.

    2. Biff Says:

Merkin is aan odd name for a wine and it appears that the dude on the label is clearly displaying a merkin. Also on the label it is stated that this is a “California” red wine. However, your description here states this: “Merkin Chupacabra is a terrific example of how far wine has come in Arizona..”

      Taken straight from dictionary.com:

      mer·kin (mûr’kĭn)
      n. A pubic wig for women.

      Nice.

It’s definitely a arizona wine. That where MJK vineyard is located.

Will pick up 2 just for the fact that I’m a huge fan of TOOL.

LOL at Merkin. Did not know what that was. Will decant AND THEN FILTER for hair before pouring this wine into my glass. :-)

    5. Purple Grillz Says:

This wine is hilariuos.. first of all, Maynard James Keenan is the former lead singer of the band, Tool. He has since moved on to create the band, A perfect Circle. There are many subversive images relating to that part of the body in Tool’s artwork and concert t-shirts.

Chupacabra is the Central and South American equivalent of Bigfoot, and folklore has it that he lives on the blood of goats. Villagers report that they find bone dry dead goats sometimes with puncture wounds in their throats.

Three cheers to Maynard.. he is always up to something. Something tells me this is very good.

    6. Jersey Jim Says:

PS…the President’s name in Dr Strangelove was Merkin Muffley. I suppose he could have been a lover of California wines made in Arizona.

    7. mrzitro Says:

The winery is in AZ but they buy the juice from Napa and Sonoma.

Off topic: Its a good thing that the label dude is using that merkin otherwise he’d be displaying his gerkin.

    8. mlong Says:

mrzitro – thanks for the clarity. weak reviews. now on the fence. Will WL hold these orders? I’m out of town next week.

    9. David Moseler Says:

this comes from Maynard James Keenan..Tool, APC, Puscifer. Juice is from California but blended and bottled in AZ. Great wine for the price!
